The National Council for Black Studies (NCBS) views the episodic program review as essential to maintaining high quality in departments and academic programs. The professional organization offers a team of experts in the field who provide rigorous examination and evaluation of units to assist departments and programs in their quest for excellence.
The Commission is designed to review policy and content decisions on Program Review, Assessment, and related areas. NCBS is in the process of developing an accreditation program designed to augment program reviews and curriculum guidelines to ensure rigor in the field.
The review teams evaluate the entire department, not just the curriculum. In addition to curriculum, general departmental operations (including financial and human resource management), faculty quality (e.g.: teaching, research and service), student performance and attitudes, as well as the unit's overall contributions to the college and campus are features of the review.
